I had such good intentions to post daily from Denver. But, between commuting from Boulder and the crazy hours of work, it fell by the wayside. Plus, it was just too much to think about on the fly. I had a hard time as a journalist in this situation. I felt more like a party hack. Most everything is staged, scripted and fake. It’s more like photographing a play. I was determined to try to avoid it as much as I could. Sure, it would be easy by staying outside the convention, but that wasn’t an option.

I don’t think i’m a “good” photographer anymore. I am constantly looking for pictures that no one cares about. I dig flaws. Here we’re spoon fed visually. Beautiful light, beautiful venues.

Imperfection is reality. Yet, we refuse to embrace it. My pictures are far “worse” than most coming from the event. I don’t have clean backgrounds, people are looking at me and the moments are off. I always imagine that editors role their collective eyes when my files appear on their screens.

I am probably just rationalizing my own inadequacies.

All these questions. no answers. just photographs i made. it’s what was in front of me.

  1. […] Check it out here. […]

  2. Rob, the reality you documented was beautifully seen. Fresh photos that I did not see coming out of the event.

I’m also bummed I was so far behind on my RSS feeds that I didn’t know you were in Denver.

    Thanks for sharing.
