A sad day

Yesterday was the last day of publication for the Albuquerque Tribune. I never worked there, but i find myself really depressed about the whole thing. I remember just starting out in photojournalism and reading about the Tribune. I remember hearing other photographers talk about it as hallowed ground - a place for documentary photography to thrive. It’s gone now - a sad day for journalism.

A slideshow with thoughts and photos from Tribune photographers and editors exists here.

This is very sad. Any time a great photo newspaper dies it is a sad thing; whether by closing or a change of management due to sale (like the Journal Tribune of Biddeford, Maine.) In college I always knew about the Albuquerque Tribune thanks to the work of its talented photographers and photo editors. I attended several POY judging sessons in that period, including the year Mike Davis won the photo editing title. His entry included feature pages on the individual planets in the solar system using NASA and handout photos. Completely stunning, and the vision has stayed with me — as did his talk at the subsequent awards weekend.
