Picture Story: A Dying Subject Has Her Say

On September 28, a 62-year-old cancer patient named Lovelle Svart threw a goodbye party for herself, and then drank a lethal cocktail she had obtained under Oregon’s doctor-assisted suicide law. She died several hours later in the presence of her family and closest friends.

The event, documented by The Oregonian reporter Don Colburn and photographer Rob Finch, was the final chapter of a project called “Living to the End,” about Svart’s final months of life. The two journalists had been recording video diaries of Svart, who attracted growing audiences by talking eloquently, honestly, and sometimes humorously about her life, illness and imminent death.
